Why Hire a Business Consultant?

There are many reasons why it makes sense to consider hiring a consultant.  Maybe you’re just starting your business and have a lot of questions.  Maybe you’re running an existing business but often wonder if you are operating as efficiently as your competitors.  Maybe you own a business that’s doing well and want to expand into areas that you are less familiar with.  These are just a few reasons why hiring a consultant might make sense.

If there’s any reason why people are smarter today than they were a century ago it’s because we’ve learned from each other.  An old adage suggests that people who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.  The only thing better than learning from your mistakes is learning from the mistakes of others.  That way you don’t have to endure the pain but still benefit from the experience.  There’s always someone who’s been doing your kind of business or something similar for years.  They’ve already made the mistakes you’re about to make and have already figured out the answers you’re looking for.

Some of these people may be your competitors. Good luck trying to get proprietary information out of them.  Others might be consultants who are willing to share their knowledge with you for a fee.  Is their fee worth their knowledge?  Maybe in some cases it isn’t.  However, information is one of the most valuable commodities in the world.  After an initial consultation, a good consultant will tell you if they can’t accommodate you and make an appropriate referral.  However, if you connect with a consultant that has information that could help you run your business better, their consulting fee will almost always cost you less than you trying to figure that information out on your own.

If you’re working on a startup, there may be many things about your industry that you don’t know yet.  It will take you time to learn the ins and outs of your particular industry.  We all know that time is money.  It could also cost you your reputation if you make mistakes along the way.  This could translate to a loss in revenue.  A consultant can help to guide you down the right path the first time around so you don’t make mistakes that will inevitably cost you money.  A consultant can also help you with your expansion plans without you fumbling around in areas of your business that you haven’t been involved with before.

Some say it’s lonely at the top.  If an employee is having difficulty with their job, they can go to their supervisor for guidance.  Where does the owner or CEO go when he/she is having difficulty?  This is another instance when a business consultant can be very helpful.

A business consultant is like a coach or a mentor.  Some business owners may feel as if they don’t need a coach but anyone could benefit from receiving impartial advice from someone who is knowledgeable about business and can look at your situation from a different perspective.  Sometimes a CEO can be too close to a situation to be able to see it clearly or objectively.  In some cases, having a lot of money invested into a particular situation can make a business owner too emotional to see a situation clearly.  A business consultant can offer insight from a different angle on any of these scenarios in a way that could immeasurably help management that are dealing with the stressors of their day-to-day operation.
